A traditional Japanese futon is a 2" thick mattress with a fabric exterior that is stuffed with cotton or synthetic batting. Western style futons are thicker and larger than the Japanese original, more resembling a conventional mattress in size. It's not uncommon to find 6" to 10" thick futons. They are often used with a wood or metal frame for dual use as a bed and a chair or couch. In some designs, the frame folds in the middle allowing the futon to be used as a couch and flattens to be used as a bed.
